Season 6, Episode 60: "Love from Bassett" (original air date: March 19, 2004)
A wedding. A trial. Revenge, betrayal, and lust in a mini. The end of it all, with lots of love from Bassett.
As Kieran and Amanda's trial looms, Nicky is doing her best to ignore it. Until she finds that Amanda has done the dirty on Kieran and turned crown witness to gain immunity from prosecution. Nicky decides she has to go to court, even though she knows it will hurt Alistair. It does, but he sees no other option than to see how it all plays out - hoping it will end badly for Kieran. Kieran seems not to care that Amanda will support the prosecution picture of him as a jealous killer rather than a husband coming to the aid of his wife.
Amanda certainly supports this picture, and ends up looking rather bad herself. Nicky is appalled at this version of events, but Amanda defends that she was only doing what she had to for her children. Nicky, feeling anguished, knows that Guy can reveal the true picture of events and offers this to Kieran's lawyer, only to find that Kieran has dismissed this option. Frustrated, Nicky goes to him, wanting him to get the real version into the open. Kieran rejects what he sees as her pity, but Nicky confesses this is not her motive. Even though she felt she had to leave, she still loves him. Buoyed by this, Kieran takes the stand and speaks honestly about what happened. But it's hard to tell which way the verdict will go - and Nicky has to leave before the outcome for another engagement...
Ken and Dana have resumed social outings, but Ken is stunned when Dana decides to propose, since she knows that this will be the likely outcome in a year or so. Ken accepts, but gets the general impression that everyone thinks Dana is mad and will come to her senses given a little time. He also decides not to mention his impending wedding to Wendy. As soon as she hears the news, she makes it clear she is very upset and bent on vengeance. Ken now fears the extremes Wendy may resort to and decides, in the interests of safety, to stall. Alistair is frustrated that Ken has caved in to Wendy's emotional blackmail and points out that life is too short to not take this shot at happiness. A near miss with a speeding car makes Ken see Alistair might be right - and the wedding is back on.
As the wedding day dawns, Wendy is at the hairdressers, preparing for a special event. Ken is paranoid about booby-trapped presents and poison - as Wendy receives hair and relationship therapy from Rhonda, who understands break-ups and betrayal. She and Gabrielle have split up over Rhonda's decision to take a job in Morecross. Rhonda successfully defuses Wendy and the wedding goes without a hitch.
Gabrielle leaves the wedding early to get a ride with Wayne, her one pure love. Which may be not so pure after all.
As the wedding guests celebrate the triumph of hope over all that other stuff, Nicky knows that Alistair loves her - but Kieran returns. He's been found not guilty of manslaughter. Nicky is very relieved, and this could be the moment where she rushes into his arms. Except it's not. And we leave her as we found her, on her own.
