Season 5, Episode 47: "When Ken met Wendy" (original air date: September 12, 2003)
Nicky forgets to go to ante-natal class with Gabrielle and clashes with Wendy over the all-important matter of a red pepper. They are both cooking special meals. Alistair deduces Wendy is preparing for her first hot date with Ken. Nicky is stressing about her parent's impending visit. And Kieran's jokes about fathers with shotguns are not helping.
Her parents arrive, without a shotgun. But Nicky senses all is not well and confronts her mother: Are her parents getting divorced? Valda tells her that Norm has been diagnosed with Alzheimers - but Valda has an alternative theory for his memory lapses and wants Nicky to give a second opinion off his notes. When Nicky does look at them, she knows the diagnosis is right, but has no idea how to disappoint her mother. Norm meanwhile, seems more accepting of his fate, but Nicky feels angry that her parents have waited six months to share this. Nicky's attention is diverted by Gabrielle, who is in labour. It is only later that she finds out the real reason her father wanted to visit - to see her, before it all turns to custard, while he still has his mind.
Meanwhile, Ken's hot date does not start well. He arrives to find Wendy distraught, because of a photo of her errant husband, featured living it up large in the social pages of a magazine. Wendy expects Ken to reject her as deranged. Instead, she finds he is similarly obsessive. They happily bond as they listen to the radio...
On Bassett FM, Alistair is filling in for Nicky as radio doctor - although his main objective is to inflict his music on the unsuspecting listening public. He immediately hits a rock in the form of Liz, who wants him to stick to medical questions between the regular playlist. When an annoyed Alistair is rude to the sick, Liz allows him to play one track on the condition he behaves. As a result, Alistair deviates onto matters of popular trivia, which he insists are more interesting than medicine. And he seems to be right. On a roll as the new king of trivia, he falls foul of Wendy and Ken when he rudely dismisses a question about When Harry Met Sally, Wendy's favourite movie. Unable to let this go, Ken and Wendy begin a quest to prove Alistair wrong.
After a rocky start, Alistair and Liz get on like a house on fire, and things look set to take a more romantic turn. Ken and Wendy never get to confront their nemesis, but through their shared obsession, they realise they have found their soul mate.
