Season 5, Episode 45: "Destiny in motion" (original air date: August 29, 2003)

In order to increase Nicky's public profile for the day when she might take over his practice, William asks her to appear on Bassett FM. She's nervous about breaking the news of possible promotion to Alistair, and pleased when he's relieved. But Nicky's ongoing friendship with Alistair does not impress Kieran, who has correctly guessed that Alistair's feelings may run deeper. Kieran feels jealous, and annoyed when Alistair uses his obsession with music to show off his connection with Nicky.

Nicky is dubious about the radio appearance, but feels forced into it when Janice van der Velter's fears about lost and lonely old people turn out to be founded. Kieran is not happy, worrying about Nicky's whereabouts. Nicky feels that his jealousy is unreasonable, and duly presents herself to finish her gig at Bassett FM. But on this night, one of her callers hints at knowledge about the body under Daphne Ave. It's Anton Devcich and Nicky feels spooked by his call and his continuing interest in her. As she exits into the darkened car park, Kieran arrives to pick her up. He heard Anton on the radio, and it only seems to back up his fears about what could happen to her. But Nicky still feels there is some deeper disquiet that she doesn't understand.

Ken is taking the case of the body under Daphne Ave very personally. The body has the acquired the nickname Wham Man because of a compilation tape of 80s hits found with him. Ken's interventions only make it harder for William to sell Daphne Ave, which now has a reputation as a murder house. The only person who seems to understand Ken's despair is Wendy. Then Ken finds an upside to Alistair's musical obsession - perhaps he can profile Wham Man based on his musical tastes. Alistair puts Wham Man's death in 1986, not 1985, as the police previously thought. Ken is buoyed by this, and so absorbed by his work, he continues to miss the cues that Wendy is keen on him.

Then when Anton calls Nicky on the radio, Ken gets a new lead. Anton frustratingly denies all knowledge of Wham Man. Even though Ken has strong suspicions and evidence that Anton did live in the house at about the right time, there is nothing he can do to prove the connection. He will have to bide his time.

Ken feels as though he has failed with Wham Man. He finally admits that his reason for taking this personally is that he could be that man, the one that no one missed, but Wendy insists that isn't true - and Ken finally realises that she likes him. A much happier man, he also makes a purchase - Daphne Ave. William finally gets the house off his hands and Ken gets a new home.
