Season 4, Episode 34: "Light my fire" (original air date: March 7, 2003)
The Bassett Volunteer Fire Brigade attend a callout at Radford House, where the school's teenage charges have been doused by sprinklers. The brigade are becoming used to suspicious fires - but this is the result of Sascha's plan to get herself expelled and save Kieran school fees.
When Neil suffers an asthmatic attack, Nicky worries about the health of the BVFB. But her checks reveal something more alarming- most of the fire brigade members have an unhealthy preoccupation with fire. Could the arsonist be within the brigade itself?
This is a theory that Ken is starting to share - and his prime suspect is the newest recruit, Todd.
Sascha finds her noble sacrifice has been in vain when Kieran is forced to lay off one of the vineyard staff, Luke, a shy young man who seems to have a crush on Sascha. She finds his problems are rather larger than her own and, starting to feel like a spoilt rich kid, she makes efforts to help him.
When some members of the BVFB seem to be avoiding their health checks, Nicky makes efforts to track them down. Lynda, the brigade's only female member, also shows a level of pyromania, and reveals a motive for the fires - to stop the Bassett Fire Brigade being closed down.
Ken uses his day off to keep an eye on Todd, and is convinced he is on to something when Todd buys a container of petrol. But his hopes are dashed when Todd fills up his lawn mower. But as Todd leaves the house again, Ken loses him. Shortly afterwards, there is another, more serious fire at the back of the pokie parlour in the main street. Lynda's panic over finding someone in the building only increases Nicky's suspicions. Ken is chagrined when Todd rescues Neil, who was on security guard duty. Even more so when Dana sees this heroism.
Neil's story about the fire isn't entirely believable, but he insists he wasn't to blame. Nicky goes to confront Lynda who's on fire brigade training with Matt - and finds that she's still evasive. But when Sascha hears about the fire at the pokie parlour she makes a connection with Luke, whose mother has a gambling problem. Sascha sounds out her suspicions and becomes convinced that Luke could be the arsonist. Matt counsels her that she has to tell someone. Sascha feels torn - but confesses to Ken.
Lynda finally appears for her health check and confesses her guilt to Nicky - but not over the fires. Volunteer fire service has been partly cover for the affair she has been having with Matt. Sascha is disappointed to realise this.
The case is closed, but Ken's jealousy is unresolved. Nicky remains mystified about the universal fascination with fire.
