Season 3, Episode 23: "The making of him" (original air date: October 9, 2002)

Alistair is feeling the pressure. The de facto head of the clinic in William's absence, he is aware that everyone, including himself, sees Nicky as the real power house. He would rather not take charge. He's also disconcerted that William seems disgustingly happy in his self-imposed exile.

Alistair treats Henk van der Velter, who is suffering from strange symptoms and insists his problems are caused by contact with toxic chemicals, rather than smoking and drinking.

Meanwhile, Enid faces trial for the murder of Arthur. Gus is frustrated that she doesn't seem to get the gravity of the possible life sentence - she's more upset that Bassett Bowling Club have turned down her request for Arthur's ashes to be scattered on the green.

The court case hinges on whether Arthur was a willing part of a suicide pact, or whether Enid took matters into her own hands. Enid is in no doubt, until Gus has questions her absolute certainty that she really knew Arthur's wishes. Her doubts increase to the point where she admits on the stand that she is no longer sure whether Arthur wanted to die, even though he took the pills without struggle.

While Nicky is at court, Alistair copes with bedlam and an increasingly tetchy Henk, who is displaying more strange symptoms. Nicky returns to find no room for one of her patients, and in the ensuing argument, Alistair feels railroaded. Even though he has misgivings, he is forced to eject a very unhappy Henk, who still insists he's suffering toxic effects.

Alistair gets blood results for Henk, which are extremely worrying. When he sees Janice outside court, the pieces fall into place. To Nicky's disgust, Alistair readmits Henk, as a form of protective custody. He is being administered rat poison. He finds from Janice that his suspicions are correct and that she was inspired by Enid. Henk is now safe, but blissfully unaware, and extremely ungrateful.

Enid is found not guilty of Arthur's murder but guilty of manslaughter. She takes no pleasure in the verdict, however, now feeling as though she did kill Arthur. Gus rallies her from despair for something more important. Together, they break into Bassett Bowling Club and scatter Arthur's ashes.
