Season 2, Episode 19: "Live and let live" (original air date: May 1, 2002)
In the wake of Alistair's problems, he is taking a more reckless approach to his life - and to Enid. When Arthur has more chest problems, Alistair lies and says that Mercy Peak is full and suggests Pemberley as an alternative, so Enid has a chance to get used to the idea. On the assumption that this is temporary, Enid agrees. Louise is worried about the wisdom of this course of action and Enid feels bereft to leave Arthur. When she realises she has been lied to, she breaks Arthur out of Pemberley. And when she confronts Alistair, he is unrepentant - how else will she see sense? Nicky is also concerned at Alistair's apparent personality change, but has problems of her own.
She and Cliff go to assess John, a single academic who is living on the farm with his pig. While he is eccentric, Nicky's assessment is that he is not suffering from mental illness. She is later upset when William takes the case from her - for the apparently spurious reason that his sister can't sell the family property while a pig is resident. She's unaware that he suspects her of giving information to a journalist who wants to do a story on Diane's case. Nicky tries to calm John's fears, but when officials arrive to remove the pig, he calls Nicky in a panic. She fears the worst and confronts William. He is surprised to find that she knows nothing of the journalist. She is surprised to find that William has found a solution to John's problems. She tries to thrash out her differences with him.
Enid starts to face the fact that she can't care for Arthur alone. She learns that she can't move into Pemberley with Arthur, and they can't afford full time nursing care. Fearing they will be separated, she feels backed into a corner.
Alistair's reckless anger takes a knock when he finds out more about his birth mother from Enid. He assumes that William is responsible for her death - but the wind is taken from his sails when he finally confronts his father - and finds that his birth mother was already dead before he was adopted.
Gus meanwhile is spending time with Todd. Since Dana left the house, it's become a boy's paradise - until Ken turns up to repossess the stereo. Gus is unaware that part of Todd's reason for trashing the place is to get Dana's attention - and he envies Todd's freedom. An ugly fight between Dana and Todd makes Gus return to Enid - where she falsely accuses him of theft. Back at Todd's he suggests Todd bite the bullet and tell Dana he wants her back. This goes down very badly. Gus is forced to return to Enid's again...
Alistair feels as though his reason for being - his anger with his father - has been removed. At a low ebb and stoned, he turns to Nicky - and she realises that he has feelings for her. Then when Alistair takes an emergency call from Gus, Nicky attends.
Gus has found Arthur dead - but Enid still has a pulse.
