Season 2, Episode 15: "Do the right thing" (original air date: April 3, 2002)

Nicky has given some assistance to Cliff's proposed teen health programme - but is annoyed to find that everyone at the local marae thinks she and Cliff are a couple. When she confronts Cliff, he gives her an ultimatum - if he's wasting his time, he'll stop bothering her.

Alistair is alarmed to find Nicky giving this serious thought, despite her doubts. She agrees to a date and Cliff goes to a lot of trouble to borrow the big-screen TV from the pub and hire 'Jane Eyre' on video. Nicky is upset when the joys of 'Jane Eyre' turn into an ugly relationship discussion. Even though Nicky denies it, Cliff has realised he is second best to Kieran.

Nicky regrets her decision. Things are further complicated when Henry Chadwick is threatened by his sister's drug dealer. Cliff intervenes. Then Nicky finds the big screen TV has been stolen. Regret at their soured friendship turns into mutual blame.

Meanwhile, Eric is annoyed about the budget blow-out at Mercy Peak Hospital and Louise seems to be the one who's being blamed. William finds that Bruce plans to support the Maori healthcare proposal and leave Mercy Peak in the lurch. When Arlene is unrepentant, William sees an opportunity.

Ken is reluctantly involved in an early morning police raid on Dana's house. Todd's brother Cornel has escaped from prison and the Police suspect him to go to Todd and Dana's to hide out. When Todd insists that Dana leave the house, she learns that Todd fears revenge from his brother- and also that Todd may have been involved in the robberies which landed Cornel in jail. After her staunch defence of Todd, Dana feels completely betrayed.

Ken continues to have trouble coping with his work duties, but refuses to take anti-depressants.

When Cornel is suspected to be somewhere in the Bassett area, Dana fears for Todd, despite her hurt. Todd gets an early morning call from Cornel - and discovers he's in the house. When Cornel insists on going for a drive, Todd thinks about alerting the police. Cornel takes Todd to a secluded spot, where Todd fears his number is up. Instead, he finds his brother seems to have had an epiphany in prison about his family and his past. He forgives Todd and reveals plans to visit Gus.

Dana insists that Todd inform the police, but Todd, relieved he got off so lightly with his brother, feels that he can't betray Cornel now. So Dana calls Ken.

The police close in on Enid's house - and find Gus, Enid and Arthur calmly having their tea. Meanwhile Ken makes another routine call on the van der Velters, only to find Cornel. Ken fears that Cornel may have harmed his parents and tries to counsel Cornel out of the thoughts which are plaguing him. But just when it seems he may have got through, Cornel stabs Ken with a screwdriver.
