Season 2, Episode 12: "Lost and found" (original air date: March 13, 2002)

When the bookshop is closed for several days, Rhonda is worried about Gabrielle - and when Nicky goes to check on Gabrielle, she is shocked to find her studio in disarray. Nicky is annoyed when Ken doesn't see cause for alarm, believing Gabrielle is a crazy. Rhonda reveals that Gabrielle is off her medication, and also that she and Gabrielle have had differences over a flirtation with Debbie Whitelaw. Debbie is mysteriously out of town.

The next day, Rhonda fears the worst when Gabrielle's burnt out car is found near a forest walking track. For Ken, the car brings back horrible memories of the recent fatal car accident. Ken's investigations make it seem as though Gabrielle is at fault - particularly when it is revealed that Eric Whitelaw claims Gabrielle made a pass at his Debbie. Rhonda is upset.

Despite the sordid lesbian rumours, everyone turns out to search for Gabrielle. Ken is less than thrilled when he gets stuck with 'mad Margaret' as a search buddy. He's also disturbed to find that he understands her symptoms all too well.

Nicky's search partner is Kieran. When he suggests that his reason for not leaving Amanda is financial, Nicky thinks he's mercenary. Kieran defends that he has more than money invested in the vineyard - and if he left, Amanda would take him for all he is worth.

The searchers find Gabrielle who is suffering from exposure. It seems like a happy ending to the search, except in another location, Ken is considering ending his own life. Unwitting intervention from Margaret is his salvation, but Ken continues to feel very down.

Nicky is taken aback when Kieran suggests she would be enough of a reason to abandon his marriage. In a very twisted way, he is saying that he loves her.

Cliff meanwhile, is conducting a more low key search. While contacting expelled kids to start a class for them, he discovers that a teenager, Wiri, has disappeared. His grandmother insists he's at school, but she seems to be suffering symptoms of Alzheimers. Cliff thinks that Wiri is in Auckland and is considering going to search, when he finds that the kid is dead.

Sue shares the news of her romance with Louise and Ross. Louise is unimpressed that William has left Sue waiting for him to phone her - and feels jealous that William has found someone new so soon after their affair. Her disapproval makes William angry. He asks her whether she expects him to wait around on the off-chance that she'll leave her marriage? Feeling bullish, he renews his contact with Sue. This leads to an embarrassing incident when Alistair comes home to find them 'in flagranté'. Sue insists she only wants a casual relationship, but William is aware she's lying. Louise apologises for her jealousy. She has to live with her decision to stick with her marriage. Louise's declaration makes William realise he has cause for hope. When he lies to Wiri's grandmother to make her feel better, he decides to stop lying to Sue. Despite Sue's vociferous objections, he ends the relationship.
