Season 1, Episode 8: "Bassett confidential" (original air date: September 19, 2001)

Nicky has a dilemma. Kieran may have asked her on a date. Or to a wine tasting. She's not sure. When she obliquely raises this with Alistair, he wonders why she's not interested in Cliff. Nicky is looking for more mystery.

Cliff doesn't buy the line about the so-called wine tasting. He warns Nicky about the ex-wives Kieran has buried in the cellar. She becomes more determined to go.

Meanwhile, Henk van der Velter has managed to injure himself in a fire. He also seems to be having trouble with the waterworks. His son, Gus, appears to have the flu and Enid is worried about Arthur catching it. William treats Henk and Nicky treats Gus. When she finds Gus and Henk both have gonorrhoea, she comes to a nasty conclusion. That Gus may have caught the infection from his father. Gus refuses to offer any clue about how he caught the disease and William warns caution.

Nicky goes to the wine tasting, to find she is the only wine taster invited. It seems to be a date, which goes very well. Nicky is tempted by the offer to stay, but opts for caution and the offer of another date. Then as she leaves, she sees Gus with Kieran's daughter, Sascha.

Sascha begs Nicky not to tell her father about the relationship with Gus. Nicky, treading carefully because of patient confidentiality, strikes a deal with her. She won't tell if Sascha promises to come for treatment if she feels ill. Nicky also feels she has to take action about Gus.

When Ken and social workers turn up to take Gus away, Enid is worried. Gus refuses to say anything. He abuses Nicky for her interference. Worried about what Sascha has heard from Nicky, he cruelly rejects her to drive her away.

Nicky's second date with Kieran doesn't go well. She is worried for Sascha, but has to maintain confidentiality. Kieran misconstrues and thinks she's had second thoughts about the kids. The date culminates in an argument about Amanda. Nicky flees. Cliff's encouraged when she ends up at the pub, drowning her sorrows.

Despite the hangover and an apology from Kieran, Nicky can't rest about Gus. She goes to see his mother, Janice, and finds out the truth about his abuser. With Nicky's encouragement, Enid offers Gus a home.

Kieran arrives home to find Sascha's distress has provided the perfect opportunity for Amanda to return. Kieran feels like a neglectful father and Amanda uses this to her advantage. Kieran is also upset to find that Nicky kept information from him. Nicky has kept confidentiality and now suffers the personal consequence. The relationship with Kieran is over before it's begun.
