Season 1, Episode 7: "Crime, punishment and everything in between" (original air date: September 5, 2001)
Nicky gets an invitation to Chook and Lynda's wedding. Chook and Lynda are the garage proprietors, whose public arguments are notorious in Bassett. What the public doesn't see is that the relationship is also violent. When Nicky realises this, she encourages Lynda to think about the relationship - she's about to marry this man. Lynda doesn't seem to want to hear her.
Despite her misgivings, Nicky feels bound to attend the hen night, which turns into a debacle, when Lynda announces that the wedding is off. Nicky was right.
Nicky is in the spotlight as the woman who caused the wedding to be cancelled. Kieran is pleased about the cancellation. He's lost a booking, but his view of marriage is cynical. William, meanwhile, thinks Nicky's view of domestic violence is simplistic.
Then Nicky confronts a very unhappy Chook, and a miserable Lynda. She also finds that Lynda feels to blame for some of their problems. Nicky assumes that Lynda is playing the victim, but Lynda denies it - she goads him into violence. She also admits that fighting and sex go hand in hand in their marriage.
Nicky decides to try and get the couple into counselling. William is impatient that Nicky persists in meddling. He thinks that she should be playing doctor, not social engineer. Despite this, Nicky persists - and becomes so frustrated with Lynda and Chook that she feels she may have blown any chance of success.
After a short time and despite some stormy counselling sessions, Lynda and Chook's wedding is back on. Nicky feels her faith in love and Lynda and Chook are vindicated. She hopes that William will show he's impressed. He doesn't. She also finds that locals seem to share William's doubts about whether the marriage will go ahead. It does and Nicky feels great. Cliff tries to make a move, but so does Kieran. He cuts in for a dance at the wedding.
Meanwhile, Enid gets a nasty fright when she finds an intruder in her home. The young guy, Gus, is Todd Van der Velter's younger brother. He is quickly apprehended. His parents want the book thrown at him, and so does Ken. Despite her upset, Enid chooses a family group conference. When community service is ordered, she wants Gus to do it at her house.
Alistair and Ken are concerned about this - and Gus isn't keen to be around an invalid like Arthur. Then he sees Enid having difficulties with Arthur. When she lies to Alistair about how she is coping, Gus backs her up. Alistair realises that Enid had ulterior motives for taking on Gus. With him around, she doesn't need social service help and there's no hard evidence that things aren't as rosy as she paints them.
