Season 1, Episode 6: "More things in heaven and earth" (original air date: August 29, 2001)
Cliff scoffs at Nicky's belief in tragic love and also suggests that being Pakeha (European) she lacks a spiritual connection. Nicky's not impressed. They witness a pub fight between two women, which everyone assumes is over a man - because one of the women, Materoa is a prostitute. When Materoa brought in, Nicky finds she has a raft of medical problems - and also that her pneumonia is in fact tuberculosis.
They now need a list of Materoa's contacts. One of the names she supplies is Manu Bishop, CEO of the local iwi authority and the guy who pays part of Cliff's wages. Cliff takes up this delicate matter and gets the clear message that Materoa is being malicious. Materoa agrees, but is unrepentant.
Her condition worsens and Nicky is worried that the treatment doesn't seem to be working. She also feels that Cliff has written off Materoa. Cliff thinks that some people don't want to be helped, but also he's discovered Materoa's backstory. She was in love with Manu Bishop's son. They were running away together when the car crashed and he died. Nicky believes that this tragic love story may be part of the reason she has so little will to live. Materoa contradicts this version of events.
Her condition continues to worsen and Cliff is now starting to feel that he may have been remiss with her as well. He posits the theory that her problem may be mate maori, or some kind of spiritual sickness. Nicky has heard of it, but finds the idea threatening. She's determined there's a physical cause. While she orders more tests and worries about liver failure, Cliff is on another line of investigation.
He comes to believe that Materoa was cursed by Anita Te Tauri, the woman from the pub. To Nicky, this just takes the biscuit - but Materoa seems to believe in the idea. Nicky has discovered that Materoa has a resistant strain of TB - but she also finds that she holds the key to Anita wanting to lift the curse.
This is done and Materoa improves. Nicky continues to stick with her opinions and Cliff with his, but the conflict is goodnatured. Nicky also explains her own tragic backstory and the reason she's cautious about getting involved with anyone. Cliff accepts this for now.
For the first time since the affair ended, Louise and William discuss personal matters, but then get called to the strange case of Morris, who has been impaled on a sun umbrella. Louise suspects the wife, a Russian mail-order bride, may have stabbed him. William suggests Louise may be transferring dissatisfaction in her own marriage. This provocation causes Louise to resume her sexual relationship with Ross. William admits he's jealous, but the status quo remains, for now.
